Music magazine Questionnaire.

I handed out a number of questionnaires about what i should include in my magazine into the public and took in all the results.
Genres (votes);
135: indie, 143: rock, 101: chart, Dance: 86, Country/folk: 91.
These results show that the two most popular genres of music are rock and indie. I am going to mix these two genres because no other magazine has used these genres together, this is going to be one of my unique selling points of my magazine.

NAMES (votes):
Indie-vidual: 112
Country/folk N' roll: 62
TSOM (The Sound Of Music):97
MMT (MY Music Taste): 94
Lets Rock N' Roll: 73
R u Indeh, Doe?: 90
My magazine is now very individual within the music magazines genres, and fortunately all the votes were added up and the name ‘Indie-vidual’, was the most popular name choice.
Competitions (votes):
C   12
H 6
B  17
V   11
H    10
F  17
This question was to find out what the public wanted to be able to win within the magazine competitions, this shows that the public would be interested more in my magazine if there was a prize that everyone would love.

FESTIVALS (Votes) :
L   12
V  5
T   6
T4   8
G   9
I  4
A   7
Festivals are large attraction for people over the age of 16. My magazine is aimed at 16’s and over and these results show that the most popular festivals are Leeds and Glastonbury. Because of this my magazine will cover both of these festivals.
6.  What would you like to see within my music magazine?
Research into this question showed that 70% of viewers would like to see an equal spread or texts and images.

7.  How much would you pay for a music magazine?
     £1.50           £2.50              £3.00        £4.00           £4.50          £5.00
Other? £_____

Researched shown that 60% of my audience would pay up to £4.00 for my music magazine.

8.  What Kind of articles and images would you expect or find interesting in my magazine?
My audience researched has shown that over 90% of people would  like to see a large sum of gig reviews, interviews about bands personal stories and about up coming albums and tours, and new pictures of bands at recent events.
So this is what i am going to include within my magazine.

9.  Do you prefer a magazine to stick to one genre, or to mix it up a little?
This question proved that 80% of the students who answered this question would like a slight mix up in genres but with popular artists. Seeing as Rock and Indie were the two most popular genre's, i am going to combine these genre's into one magazine to attract a wider audience.

10.   Should my magazine company create an app for smart phones? E.g. Online Magazine (pay monthly) Or other?
This showed that over 90% of students aged 16 and over would like an app for a smart phone. This app would be an online magazine, it also showed that they would like to pay for the magazine in one payment for each issue and not monthly.

Convetions Of A Double Page Spread.

This is what i found common in almost all double page spreads of a music magazine,
All of this shows me what my magazine should contain and how it should be designed:

Almost all the cover artists pose with serious facial expressions;
there are pictures of the featured band on both sides of the double page spread;
Throughout the articles there are many different side headings, and fonts;
Each double page spread has a a colour scheme too, of still only three colours;
All double page spreads contain quotes from the artists;
All articles are in columns and do not run over pictures or out of line;
Article text is very small, this is so the magazine writer can fit more on the pages and makes the slightly bigger sub headings seem larger than they are;
Pictures have a caption, anchoring the meaning of the image;
Start of different articles have drop capitals;
They almost all contain stand first paragraphs.

Priestley Music Magazine research.

My Magazine.
Genre: Indie/other
Magazine: Front Covers.

There are many different types of music magazines, and this is my analysis on different genre's of music magazines.

For all my magazine ideas I am aiming the target audience at people roughly aged 15 and over. I have done this because That’s about the age people start to attend gigs and musical events with there own age group.

I mainly want to aim my magazines on some of the most popular musical genres or maybe mix the magazine genres up to widen the target audience and will possibly influence them to a new, extended music taste.

Layout
The title must be at the top of the front cover so that the magazine is easy to identify.
There must be a dominant image on the front cover of an important article inside the magazine.
Text anchorage should be placed around the image, and not cover it and the background needs to be plain so that the images and text stands out. (unless the text is lower down and does not interfere with the image too much)

I also think, for future reference, that the magazines colour scheme and design should be changed every week. This makes the magazine seem different, and never gets boring or, 'samey'.

What My Research Has Shown.

For the background, the colours need to be bright and standout, or dark to make the image stand out. It is like a mix and match design for different covers.  This is so the magazine stands out and is eye catching to by passers. All magazine covers are very similar in styles and in the way they are designed, this makes it hard to have a unique selling point. So the only way to keep your magazine unique is to include the best artists of the chosen genre and try and go a little further than other magazines do during interviews or backstage information. (through research)
Also to include prizes that other magazine do not, for example, trips to exact destinations that over magazines have not covered. Or, large cash prizes and chances to meet famous artists as well as tickets to their gigs.

Masthead: The name and/or logo of the magazine. The mast head is in a fixed location, always to the top left. The font is always the same in every issue, this is what makes the magazine identifiable by customers.

Cover lines:  the cover line is hook or an insight into the magazine looking to attract buyers. the cover line normally acts like a caption to the image it is covering.

Call out: A call out is a quote, or an edited piece of text from an article inside the magazine. The call out must be mind boggling, or extremely 'tasteful', to the buyer to make them want to read on.

Main Image:  The main image normally runs over the side of the cover so that it is not visible. The main artist(s) normally look at you from the front cover, but others show artists looking away to the side of the cover.
